Plenary: Scaling up Engagement in Producer Livelihoods

Justin Tait working jointly for Unilever and Oxfam, Jan-Kees Vis from Unilever and Clemens Tenge from Symrise AG, discussed how global firms – who are often distant from the actual sourcing from smallholders – scale up their positive impact on the livelihoods of smallholders. Unilever discussed their new strategy for scaling up engagement with smallholders, along with the results of recently commissioned research into “success factors” for lead firms and suppliers. Symrise, a global flavor company, shared an example of a lead firm/supplier partnership to improve conditions in vanilla production.
