Open Space: Resilience in the Sugar Cane Sector

Solidaridad and ProForest led an interactive open space session to share their approaches to the risks and issues in the sugar cane sector.  Solidaridad, through their regional Panamericaña program, works with 22 cane mills in 4 countries to address issues of low productivity, labor and working conditions and the pathway towards certification. ProForest works directly with suppliers of large CPG brands like PepsiCo on responsible sourcing strategies, which include assistance to move their mills in their supply chains to Bonsucro certification. The issues of third party labor contracting, the mobility of the work force and low commodity prices were among the topics discussed in the session.
