Improving Livelihoods in Dominican Republic Cacao

Join the Living Income Community of Practice, co-facilitated by the Food Lab, GIZ & ISEAL, in one of this months webinar’s: Improving Livelihoods in Dominican Republic Cacao: Measuring and Closing the Living Income Gap. In 2015, Clif Bar partnered with Social Accountability International (SAI), and with key input from Richard Anker and Martha Anker, created a new methodology to estimate the living income level and measure the living income gap for smallholder cacao farmers in the Dominican Republic (DR). Building upon the Ankers’ living wage research in the DR, this new model estimates the living income needed for farmers to have a decent standard of living and build economically sustainable businesses. Guided by information garnered through extensive interviews with farmers and other experts in the DR, Clif Bar partnered with the DR government, agronomists, and farmers to implement a pilot program aimed at closing the living income gap for cacao farmers in their DR supply chain. One year into the pilot project, Thao Pham of Clif Bar, Jane Hwang of SAI, and Altair Rodriguez, DR cacao farmer and in-country program coordinator, will discuss the path they took – from benchmark methodology to implementation – and share key lessons from their successful public-private partnership. Martha Anker and Richard Anker will also join, to discuss highlights from their original research in the DR.
